2021-3 EDUC301 CONTENT AREA READING
The primary goal of this course is to equip high school subject-matter teachers of various content area pedagogies to use literacy, primarily the textbook, to assist student learning. The focus is reading to learn, while the overarching idea of this course is: analytical readers are analytical learners. It is designed to introduce content area teachers to best practices in literacy instruction that can be incorporated into content area teaching by focusing heavily on the application of theory into practice. Students will explore the various contexts surrounding the nature of reading and reading instruction in light of classroom diversity and the unique needs of the adolescent learner. Particular focus is placed on reading strategies that help students understand specific subject matter content, application of strategies for text comprehension and text evaluation, and comprehension assessment.

2021-3 LITR4751 MAJOR AUTHOR: SHAKESPEARE
This course will familiarize students with Elizabethan theatre, language, and culture—the world in which Shakespeare lived and worked. Students will conduct close readings of a number of Shakespeare’s most acclaimed plays, progressing through his dramatic works by categorizing them in three groups: comedies, tragedies, and histories. Finally, they will focus on some of his poetry. By the end of this course, students will have developed a strong understanding of Shakespeare’s works—their style, their linguistic accomplishments, their hallmarks—as well as a working knowledge of the Elizabethan Period in which he wrote.
