2020-1 EDLD5013O SCHOLARLY WRITING SEMINAR
The scholarly writing seminar is a ten-week course, featuring lectures and writing tasks, that introduces students to conventions, problems, and techniques in academic writing at the graduate level. Students of any content area may take the course to develop foundational competence in communicating appropriately in writing at university. The course provides instruction and practice for writing effectively in any situation but specifically addresses the needs of University of Belize Master’s students. Students learn to revise their writing and respond to the writing of others. They attend lectures covering a range of topics on writing, and complete associated writing assignments—in a progressive and cumulative way—that teach fundamental concepts of academic writing all students and scholars use: evaluating sources, summarizing and synthesizing research, attributing ideas properly, employing academic language effectively, situating the self, developing an academic style and authoritative tone, communicating ideas in clear and effective prose, and performing other key skills of academic argumentation.
