This survey course examines the evolution and development of African societies and cultures from the earliest times to the sixteenth century. Diverse themes and topics will be covered including the prehistory of Africa; the evolution of agriculture (the domestication of plants and animals); migrations and settlement patterns; state formation and African contacts with the outside world.
