2021-1 SWRK3401 BASIC COUNSELLING I

Counseling 1 is a practice-based course designed to train social workers in basic counseling skills that integrate theory with practice. In the first of a 2-part series, the student will learn basic techniques appropriate within a generalist social work practice. The course will reflect the multicultural reality of Belize incorporating social work values and ethics as it looks into theory, application, and intervention within a social work model. This course will use Egan’s theory of person-centered counseling as well as Martin’s concept of evocative empathy. The lab will include role playing and modeling to give the student opportunities to study both the science and the art of social work counseling as they have the chance to integrate theory and practice.
