2021-1 SWRK3301 HUMAN RIGHTS AND SOCIAL WORK

This course provides an introduction to human rights instruments, and an understanding of how human rights covenants and conventions become national law and the ensuing responsibilities of a nation following ratification of these instruments. Students will be exposed to the UN family and the roles and responsibilities of each division. Special emphasis will be placed on human rights issues in Belize and the social worker’s role as advocate. The course synthesizes relevant knowledge of literature and experience related to historical and current trends and strategies/practice issues in the areas of human rights. A major focus will be relating the human rights framework to issues of protection for children, people with disabilities, older adults, and other marginalized groups.
