2021-3 MBIO2303 UNDERWATER RESEARCH METHODS

This course will provide the skills required to safely conduct underwater research in tropical marine systems. It will introduce students to the commonly used under water sampling techniques including transects, quadrats, roving diver, stationary counts and manta tows for coral reefs, including fish and invertebrates. Students will be trained in the application of these techniques using advanced SCUBA training to safely conduct environmentally sound research. This course will allow students to gain knowledge and experience in scientific diving, dive rescue, underwater navigation, mapping techniques, CPR, first aid, oxygen first aid and hazardous marine life injuries. Students must successfully demonstrate scientific diving standards and water skills necessary to certify them as scientific divers and will receive AAUS scientific diver, PADI Rescue Diver and DAN Diving First Aid for Professionals certification. This course includes a 7 day intense field course at the Calabash Caye Field Station, Turneffe Atoll.
